Oceans Alive Scallops strongly believes in supporting our community and its members in both good times and bad.  As the last few years have been particularly difficult each member of Oceans Alive Scallops has been doing their part to help the less fortunate.  With a focus on our local Greater New Bedford communities, and an eye towards a brighter world, Oceans Alive Scallops has had the good fortune to be in a position to work with the following like minded groups:

Gifts to Give

Oceans Alive Scallops supports their simple, but important, mission:
For a child growing up in a poor or low-income family: homelessness, safety, food, health, education, basic essentials, engagement and well-being are more than just words.
--
Help us connect these kids with what they need. We are not about reinventing the wheel. We are about leveraging existing resources and banding together to build a pathway of service, caring and giving for all our children.

United Way of New Bedford
Oceans Alive Scallops believes that everyone should be aware of the United Way and, if possible, do their part to help them out.  There organization believes that:

It takes everyone in our community working together to create a brighter future. Each day, United Way of Greater New Bedford brings people from all across the region – local businesses, volunteer groups, nonprofits and concerned citizens – together to tackle community issues that affect us all.

We believe that we can change what we see in the world – and we can start right here in Greater New Bedford. Join the LIVE UNITED movement and be part of the change. Together, united, we can inspire hope and create opportunities for a better tomorrow.

Children's Advocacy Center

The CAC is another group that Oceans Alive Scallops supports whole-heartedly.

The Children’s Advocacy Center of Bristol County is a child centered facility to assist child victims of abuse and their families.

The Children’s Advocacy Center of Bristol County is an agency for community partners with a collective expertise to participate in the investigation of reported allegation of sexual abuse, witness to violence and abuse to disabled persons.  The CAC places a very high priority on the healing aspects for victims of abuse and is committed to assisting families in their healing of the traumatic event.  Teams of professionals come together to investigate allegations of abuse and assist families in the healing process there after. Forensic interviews, health services and resources assistance are ways in which the CAC established connections with families to assist them in their time of need.

D.A.R.E.

Since 1983 the D.A.R.E. program has been working to keep kids off drugs.  Unfortunately the Greater New Bedford area has a relatively high number of drug users and as such Oceans Alive Scallops believes the D.A.R.E. program is of particular importance to our community.

In it's own words, D.A.R.E. is a police officer-led series of classroom lessons that teaches children from kindergarten through 12th grade how to resist peer pressure and live productive drug and violence-free lives.

Community Boating Center

Our community is blessed with being located on the water and the ocean has played a positive role in the lives of everyone here at Oceans Alive Scallops.  We feel that  should have the opportunity to fully enjoy this rich natural resource and Community Boating Center helps make that possible.  From the CBC's own website:

Community Boating Center strives to instill in the young and continue to teach people of all ages the value of integrity, sound judgment, teamwork and environmental awareness.  We do this by offering educational opportunities and access to the marine environment, regardless of means, through instruction, mentoring and coaching.

Community Boating Center's mission is to enrich the lives of New Bedford area residents through boating.  We use sailing to teach positive life values to the residents and especially the young people of Greater New Bedford.

American Cancer Society

Cancer effects our global community and along with heart disease is a leading cause of death.  At Oceans Alive Scallops we feel that supporting The American Cancer Society and similar groups will one day lead to a cure for this awful disease.  In their own words:

Together with our millions of supporters, the American Cancer Society (ACS) saves lives and creates a world with less cancer and more birthdays by helping people stay well, helping people get well, by finding cures, and by fighting back.

Smiles Mentoring Program

Every member of the Oceans Alive Scallops team has had their lives positively influenced by older mentors who took the time to help steer us in the right direction.  Many young people, however, are not fortunate enough to have these positive influences directly involved with their lives.  It is for this reason that we support the Smiles Mentoring Program and their mission of:

Serving the New Bedford and Fall River areas by working with school, business and community partners on a clear mission to affect social change. SMILES strives to help students achieve their personal and educational potential by pairing them with positive adult mentors.

Dana-Farber Cancer Institute

Another wonderful group that Oceans Alive Scallops believes is on the right path towards finding a cure while offering compassionate care for those currently inflicted with this horrible disease.  Specifically, Oceans Alive Scallops supports Dana-Farber in its annual Marathon Challenge:

The Marathon Challenge directs 100 percent of funds raised to the Claudia Adams Barr Program in Innovative Basic Cancer Research, which enables researchers at the leading edge of scientific sleuth work to achieve better cure rates and to enhance patients' quality of life. DFMC took its first steps in 1990 as one of the inaugural organizations in the official B.A.A. Boston Marathon® Charity Program.

Old Rochester Youth Football

Many of us here at Oceans Alive Scallops enjoyed our younger days playing football.  Some of us, however, did not have the opportunity to participate in this character building sport until we were in high school. Old Rochester Youth Football seeks to change that for the area youth in Mattapoisett, Marion and Rochester, MA respectively.  Oceans Alive Scallops supports ORYF and asks that others help out as well.  Please go to the website and check it out.  Perhaps you can donate some time or money to help the next generation develop both physically and mentally.

Downtown New Bedford, Inc.

Oceans Alive Scallops is located on the outskirts of downtown New Bedford and we feel lucky to be here.  In addition to being home to the largest commercial scallop fleet in the US the City of New Bedford has done an excellent job maintaining its historical identity while developing new business and entertainment opportunities.  This process is helped by organizations such as Downtown New Bedford, Inc.  Visit their website and learn about ways in which you can help out and ways that this organization can help both you and your business.

Northeast Seafood Coalition

Oceans Alive Scallops recognizes the need to harmonize the relationship with ground fisherman and the ocean.  Northeast Seafood Coalition works to do just that.  Although the NSC is not directly involved in the scallop fishery Oceans Alive Scallops recognizes the brotherhood that is the seafood industry and supports NSC in their mission to:

NSC’s mission is to work for the long term health of fishery resources, fishing communities, and the fishing industry throughout the northeast.  Since 2002, NSC has worked in the policy process in efforts to help develop rules to rebuild the northeast groundfish fishery.  NSC works for rules that embody real solutions to complex fishery problems.   NSC opposes overfishing.

New Bedford Pigeon Club

Oceans Alive Scallops loves and respects all animals and we are especially fond of those animals in which a greater bond is formed with humans.  Racing pigeons, or more accurately referred to as Racing Doves, are one of the greatest success stories in the history of human and animal relationships. They have played a central role in the development of countries and their institutions including both financial and military.  Although this ancient practice is not as common as it once was groups such as the New Bedford Pigeon Club help perpetuate these great animals and teach, first hand, our younger generations about their lives and the historical importance of their relationships with humans.

All About the Animals

Oceans Alive Scallops is comprised of animal lovers and as such we feel compelled to help out some of the more unfortunate animals out there.  Sometime ago a customer introduced us to All About the Animals Rescue and after carefully reviewing their work we decided to get active and help them in their quest to find "Forever Homes" for their temporary guests.  Go to their website and read about what they do.  Perhaps you will feel compelled to help out as well or better yet adopt one of their life-loving friends.
